What is Agile governance?

‘Agile governance’ is a modern approach to leadership that helps governing bodies respond quickly and effectively to change while staying aligned with the school’s (or group’s) mission and vision. This means being flexible in decision-making, proactively reviewing strategic goals, and collaborating with the Head, leadership team and stakeholders to ensure decisions are well-informed and can be made at pace. By focusing on transparency, accountability and strategic priorities, agile governance enables boards to adapt to challenges and seize opportunities whilst maintaining effective management of risks.

The Circle Model of Governance

The Circle Model is a governing body structure that operates without standing committees. Instead, the full board works collaboratively as a single team to oversee all aspects of governance. The governing body meets regularly—often monthly or each half term—to discuss issues, make decisions, and delegate specific monitoring or project-based tasks to individual governors or small “task and finish” groups.

Key Benefits:

  • Encourages stronger teamwork and collective responsibility among governors

  • Streamlines decision-making and reduces duplication

  • Enhances communication between the Chair, Head, and board

  • Keeps governors better informed and engaged with current school developments
