Introducing the NEW Chairs’ Development Programme

Be part of the pilot cohort of AGBIS's NEW Chairs’ Development Programme, launching in December 2026.

This six-month programme has been designed specifically for new and aspiring Chairs of Governors, providing the knowledge, confidence and connections needed to lead governance effectively. Through a blend of online and in-person sessions, participants will learn from experts, share experiences with peers and develop lasting networks across the sector.

The programme explores the key responsibilities and challenges of chairing a Board, including:

• The role of the Chair and effective governance leadership
• Building a productive Chair-Head relationship
• Leading an effective Board and managing Board dynamics
• Strategy, school improvement and long-term sustainability
• Financial oversight, risk and assurance
• Safeguarding, compliance and regulatory responsibilities
• Board culture, stakeholder engagement and reputation
• Board composition, succession planning and governor development
• Crisis management and difficult conversations
• Evaluating Board effectiveness and measuring impact

A key feature of the programme is the opportunity to learn from and alongside peers. Through facilitated discussions, shared challenges and networking opportunities, participants will develop a trusted support network that extends well beyond the programme itself.
