WHAT IS AGBIS? |
The Association of Governing Bodies of Independent Schools supports and advises governing bodies of schools in the independent sector on all aspects of governance, under the umbrella of the Independent Schools Council.
The objects of the Association are the advancement of education in independent schools and the promotion of good governance in such schools.
The Association is empowered to give guidance to the governing bodies, to consult with and speak for them on matters relating to the governance of independent schools.
The Association works from an office employing a full-time General Secretary, a part-time Training & Membership Secretary and a full-time PA & Office Manager. The Executive Committee is entrusted with the Management of the Association and has absolute discretion in applying the funds in furtherance of the objects of the Association.
The services AGBIS provides:
Regular seminars for new and experienced governors and seminars in cooperation with other ISC Associations.
Legal and practical advice is obtained on the impact of new legislation affecting the work and responsibilities of governors.
In-depth reviews of the work of individual governing bodies are arranged on request.
Legally cleared model contracts for Heads, Bursars and Teachers are available to AGBIS member schools.
A register with the contact details of schools' AGBIS representatives is kept and circulated as appropriate, for networking purposes.
AGBIS maintains a list of potential new governors and - where possible - matches those with the requirements of schools.
Information is circulated by newsletter and other mailings.
Telephone advice of a general nature is available from the General Secretary.
