The work of the AGBIS office is overseen by a Board of school governors who are representatives elected by the member school.
Richard Harman, General Secretary was educated at The King’s School, Worcester, followed by Trinity College, Cambridge, where he read English.Having spent two years working for an academic publisher, he decided his real vocation was in teaching.After five years at Marlborough College teaching English and Drama, during which time he also completed his PGCE at Exeter University, he spent 12 years at Eastbourne College.Progressing from Head of English to Housemaster of a Sixth Form girls’ house to member of the Senior Management Team, he then became Headmaster of Aldenham in September 2000 and thence to Uppingham in 2006.After a decade leading Uppingham and 32 years overall in teaching, he embarked on a third career as General Secretary of AGBIS. Richard is much enjoying the challenges at AGBIS, having been Chairman of the Boarding Schools’ Association for 2011-12 and Chairman of HMC for 2014-15.
Training & Membership Secretary.
Andy Robinson, Training & Membership Secretary. After graduating from the University of Salford with a joint honours degree in mathematics and physics, Andy entered Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth in September 1980. During his career in the Royal Navy where he specialised in training, leadership and management, Andy undertook a number of senior positions including Naval Service Recruiting Operations Manager and Director of Training for an establishment of seven Royal Naval schools. In 2010 he was appointed Bursar and Clerk to the Governors of St Hugh's School, Oxfordshire and became the AGBIS Training and Membership Secretary in April 2015. In his current role Andy has provided training, facilitated strategy days and conducted reviews of governance for a total of over one hundred independent schools' governing bodies as well as directing AGBIS conferences and seminars. He was previously involved with two local charities as a trustee and Chairman and is currently a governor of a large co-educational independent 3-18+ day school.
Director of Operations
Rachel Cooke, Director of Operations will be joining us on January 1st 2018 from United Learning, where for the past three years she has been Senior Project Lead, Strategy and Performance. Before that, she worked variously in the NHS, for the Association of Colleges and in programme and project management at the Learning and Skills Improvement Service and at the Institute for Learning. A graduate of the University of Hull, where she read Philosophy, Rachel has also taught English in Mexico and is currently a governor at The Hurlingham Academy. Although her primary role with AGBIS will be to run the head office operations based in Welwyn, during 2018 Rachel will also be getting out and about to meet members and to establish connections with our colleagues in the other Associations under the ISC umbrella.
Accounts & Communications Manager
Carol Carty, Accounts & Communications Manager joined AGBIS in August 2010. Before taking a degree in Business Studies she worked as IT Technician in a secondary school. She is responsible for the administration of the e-Learning course for new governors.
Gillian Dobson, Administration Manager joined AGBIS in April 2013. Gillian spent 22 years in Market Research before taking a career break to raise her son. In recent years Gillian has worked in a variety of roles including running the office of a nationwide charity as well as managing the admin of five churches in our local team. Gillian is a Director of the Digswell Arts Trust, which provides studios and support for emerging artists.
The elected and co-opted members of the Board are:
Lorna Cockingis the Chair of Governors at Kent College in Canterbury. She is also a trustee of the National Foundation for educational Research (NFER). She has held a range of governance roles. She was Chairman of the Council of the Girls’ Day School Trust (one of the largest educational charities in the country) between 2007-14, and prior to that Chair of the board of governors of Middlesex University, where she is now Pro-Chancellor. She has been a board member of the British Educational Communication and Technology Authority, the Specialist Schools and Academies Trust and a member of the CBI Education and Training Council. She has also served on two Departmental working groups on post-16 education. A graduate of Ancient History and Archaeology, she initially became a teacher before moving into publishing where she was UK Publishing Director for Longman.
Margaret Rudland was Head of The Godolphin and Latymer School from January 1986 to December 2008.She taught Mathematics at this school 1969-1972 before working as a VSO in Nigeria.At St Paul’s Girls’ School, from 1972-1983, she became Head of Mathematics and Second Mistress, moving to Norwich High School as Deputy Head.In 1996 she was President of the Girls’ Schools Association, having previously chaired the Education Committee.She has represented the independent sector on the General Teaching Council, been on the Board of UCAS and a Council Member of UCL.She is currently Chair of Governors at St Margaret's School Bushey.
David Tayloris a Governor at St Lawrence College, Sutton Valence School, Queen Anne’s Caversham. After teaching at Watford Grammar School, where he was head of classics, he joined Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Schools, becoming Director of Inspections in Ofsted before leaving to work as an international consultant. He is currently Chair of Governors at St Lawrence College, Chair of Education at Sutton Valence School and governor at Queen Anne's, Caversham.
